Nations Sign Treaty to Protect Endangered Sharks

A U.N.-supported wildlife treaty has been signed by over 100 nations to protect seven shark species: great white, whale, basking, spiny dogfish, porbeagle, shortfin and longfin mako sharks.  The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) estimates that 17% of 1,044 known shark species are threatened.

Heavy Snow in Minnesota Suffocating Shooting Preserves

Deep snow in Minnesota is making it difficult to operate shooting preserves.  This and the bad economy result in a double-whammy for the hunting clubs.  The Wild Wings preserve of Oneka actually sought out customers for the first time, since its membership waiting list couldn’t bring in sufficient business.

Montana Tourist Spending Drops Greatly in 2009

Nonresident spending in Montana dropped around 30% in the third quarter of 2009, according to a study by the University of Montana.  Outfitted trips were particularly affected, according to Norma Nickerson of the UM Institute of Tourism & Recreation Research.  People scaled back, such as doing half-day trips instead of full-day or multi-day excursions.

Beverly Caribou Herd Collapse Holds Warning for Bathurst Herd

The Beverly caribou herd has dropped from hundreds of thousands of animals down to 2,000, according to Alex Hall, a Fort Smith  outfitter who used to be a wildlife biologist.  This could indicate the direction of the Bathurst herd, which has seen hunting severely restricted.

Colorado Rafting Bill Approved by House Committee

The Colorado House Judiciary Committee has approved the “Clarify River Outfitter Navigation Right” bill, House Bill 10-1188, by a vote of seven to three.  The bill would allow rafting guides to use rivers that flow through private property.
